SELF DIRECTED COMMUNITY
Click on each to view the pictures or scroll down the page. (exercise) (stress management) (restaurant dinner) (potluck dinner) (restaurant dinner) (newsletters) What is a self directed community? The definition of self is by means of ones self, the definition of directed is subject to regulation, the definition of community is a unified body of individuals having a common goal. Our Self Directed Community is group of people with the common goal of reversing heart disease by following the 4 part regulations of the Dean Ornish Program. We began our self directed community in January 2003. We are all participants of the Dean Ornish Program at United Hospital in Clarksburg West Virginia. I want to thank Frank Taylor for his help and the First Baptist Church of Nutter Fort for the use of their facilities. Our goal is to align ourselves in a meaningful way in order to maintain the Dean Ornish lifestyle for the rest of our lives. Our mission is to serve as a catalyst for bringing our members into healing communities around the core component of the program. To become mentors for others with heat disease. To serve as a maintenance program for sustaining the Dean Ornish lifestyle. To enhance the quality of life and to demonstrate how this knowledge is the source of healing on the physical, emotional and spiritual level of each individual. Following and embodying the principles of nonjudgmental acceptance and the interpersonal values of group support. (listening with empathy and compassion, speaking about things one cares about) Our objective is to support a collective shift in thinking about heart disease and the development of the Ornish Lifestyle at the grass roots level. A shift in the collective thinking of the nation in the former basis of the knowledge of heart disease to include lifestyle change as a treatment option for reversing heart disease. Our first meeting was a business meeting, we elected officers. (President, Vice-president, Secretary, Treasurer) We elected to establish dues for the group, which are optional for those who have hardships. We planned our next four weeks of activities. Meeting on Thursday of each week starting at 5:00 PM. All including exercise, stress management, group, and Ornish dinner. We decided to name our community Back to Health and Living. We will have a business meeting once each month to plan weekly activities and bring up new business plans for the Community. I. During February 2003 we approved our Bylaws. II. During March 2003 we approved our Modality Adherence Program. III. During June 2003 we hosted the first annual Self Directed Community Meeting. Attendees were from Parkersburg, Huntington, Charleston, Morgantown, Prenston, and Pittsburgh. The meeting was to discuss the ideas from each site and review of how we maintain our Self Directed Community. Click above to see some of the highlights. IV. On October 16, 2004 we hosted the second annual Self Directed Community Meeting. Attendees were from Parkersburg, Huntington, Charleston, Morgantown, Prenston, Pittsburgh, Windber, and Greensburg. The meeting was to discuss the ideas from each site and review of how we maintain our Self Directed Community. Click above to see some of the highlights. V. On October 22, 2005 we hosted the third annual Self Directed Community Meeting. Attendees were from Parkersburg, Huntington, Charleston, Morgantown, Prenston, Pittsburgh, Windber, Greensburg, and New York. The meeting was to discuss the ideas from each site and review of how we maintain our Self Directed Community. Ornish updates and a telephone conference with Dr. Ornish. VI. On May 19, 2007 we sponsored our annual WV and PA meeting to discuss the best ideas from all SDC's on increasing participation in the SDC after graduation from the hospital program. From the feedback we received from different locations, it is our belief that we cannot force anyone to attend the SDC. We can only make the SDC available to everyone and try to help with anyone's special needs. These special needs may be diet at the potluck dinners, or special exercise needs. We will try to make our meetings have more verity and still comply with the four modalities which makes up our bylaws.
Next are some pictures from our first meeting. (1-09-2003) I did not include a picture from our group support meeting. Below is a picture of our exercise walking class, except for two individuals I missed in the picture.

This site will be continually updated please visit us again. I am proud to be a part of this community of great people, and in the years to come we will make a large impact on heart disease reversal and prevention, by providing the proof that a positive life style change, can reverse heat disease. And also that this life style of diet, exercise, stress management, and group discussion, if started early in life can prevent heart disease in many people. Any questions email me at lmassey@ma.rr.com, I would be excited to hear from you, and I can provide you with a list of participants and staff that can talk with you.
